HTC Sensation XL revealed – everything you need to know

HTC has finally revealed the HTC Sensation XL – formerly known as the HTC Runnymede. Read on to find out exactly what goes into the new giant of the smartphone world.
4.7-inch display
When we said the HTC Sensation XL would be a giant, we meant it quite literally. It’ll have a 4.7-inch screen, which is almost half an inch bigger than the screen of theHTC Sensation from which it borrows a name. And that’s hardly small. The only possible area of concern is the resolution, which remains at 800 x 480.
1.5GHz processor
The HTC Sensation XL will be powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255 processor. That’s the same single-core processor that runs the HTC Flyer tablet. No, it’s not dual-core, but in truth that’s not necessary to run a high-class smartphone. Just look at the next generation of Windows Phone 7.5 devices for proof. The processor will be backed by 768MB of RAM.
16GB internal storage
Clearly mindful of the HTC Sensation XL’s music-focus, the company has wisely packed in 16GB of internal storage. That’s quite a lot for an HTC device, and should provide ample room for a good number of music tracks and apps.
8-megapixel camera
HTC has packed in a decent-looking 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and a tasty f/2.2 aperture for super-fast snaps. It can only handle up to 720p video, though – no ‘full HD’ 1080p.
Slim but not too heavy
The HTC Sensation XL is a big old device, as you’d expect – it’s 132.5 x 70.7mm head-on. However, it’s surprisingly thin at 9.9mm, and while 162.5 grams isn’t exactly light, it’s still only about 15 grams more than the much smaller HTC Sensation.
Beats Audio
Other than the sheer size of the thing, the HTC Sensation XL’s biggest selling point has to be the inclusion of Beats Audio. This is a product of HTC’s recent partnership with Dr Dre’s audio equipment company. Like the HTC Sensation XE, Beats Audio mode improves sound quality when activated, and the phone will also come with a fine pair of Beats Audio earbuds.
1600 mAh battery
Yep, big device, big(ish) battery. You might have expected it to be even bigger, but that’s the benefit of Qualcomm’s latest single-core processors – they’re very efficient.
Out in November on Vodafone
Not much to add to that, other than keep your eyes fixed on the UK network’s website for a sign-up page. Naturally, we’ll let you know when it goes live.
