Top 5 big-screen smartphones

Smartphones come in all shapes and sizes, and if you’re looking to upgrade and want a bit more screen real estate to play with, there are plenty of plus-size options that fit the bill. Here we take a look at our five favourites.
HTC Sensation XL
4.7-inch S-LCD, 480 x 800 resolution
The Sensation XL isn’t out yet, but with its 4.7-inch display it’s already casting quite a shadow over the smartphone market. It’ll be one of the first phones to arrive with Beats by Dr Dre audio goodness on board after HTC’s recent takeover over Beats Audio, which together with that large screen looks set to make the Android-powered superstar a great all-round entertainer, whether it’s music, video or gaming you’re into.
And with that formidable screen size comes a formidable spec, too: the Sensation XL will come packing among other things a beefy 1.5GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera and 16GB of on-board storage.

Samsung Galaxy Note
5.3-inch Super-AMOLED, 800 x 1280 resolution
We’re not altogether sure whether the Galaxy Note can get away with being called a smartphone, but Samsung says it is so we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for now. At 5.3-inches across, however, the Note’s gargantuan screen makes it feel a lot like a tablet in smartphone’s clothing, which of course is the idea.
But there’s plenty of innovation here, too. The included stylus – or S-Pen as Samsung chooses to call it – enables you to use the Galaxy Note as a digital notepad, with a range of apps and services on board that have been tweaked to support the unusual input method.
There’s dual-core 1.4GHz processing goodness on board, along with 1080p video recording, a high-powered graphics chipset and up to 32GB of storage. In other words, it’s very big, but very clever too.
HTC Titan
4.7-inch S-LCD, 480 x 800 resolution
Take a brief look at the HTC Titan’s spec sheet and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were checking out the Sensation XL in disguise. The screen size is the same, the processor is the same, and most of the other specs are either the same or very similar too.
But there’s one crucial difference: the HTC Titan is one of the new breed of smartphones running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, the heavily updated version of Microsoft’s mobile OS that launched last year.
With over 500 new features to get to grips with, Mango marks a new beginning for Windows Phone, and what better device to do it justice than this large-screen behemoth?
Sony Ericsson Galaxy Arc S
4.2-inch LED-backlit Reality Display, 480 x 854 resolution
A lot of big-screened phones tend to look rather clumsy, but not the Xperia Arc – easily one of the best looking phones that’s surfaced this year. And with this latest ‘S’ reboot, it’s been given a fresh set of weapons to take on the great and the good of the smartphone game, including an uprated 1.4GHz processor.
But even though it’s unchanged from the original model, the Galaxy Arc S’ Reality Display is surely the highlight of its feature list, with Sony’s Mobile Bravia picture engine ensuring bright and crisply detailed images whether you’re gaming, photo editing or browsing the web.
Samsung Galaxy S II
4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus, 480 x 800 pixels
It says a lot for how good the Galaxy S II actually is that it makes this list despite being significantly older than any other phone on this list. That’s largely thanks to its mighty specification, which ticks all the ‘superphone’ boxes you could care to thinking, including the likes of a dual-core processor, 1080p video recording and all sorts of connectivity options.
But top of the list has to be its large 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display fronted by a Gorilla Glass screen, which delivers bright and vibrant colours, crisp detail, and deep, deep blacks.
Do you agree with our selection of big-screen smartphone superstars, or have you got other suggestions for our list? One name we’re sure will receive plenty of support is the Google Nexus Prime, but with its spec not yet finalised we’ve decided to leave it on the sidelines for now. But if you have some other names you want to throw into the hat, let us know in the Comments!
