iPad 2, HTC Incredible S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: review ratings roundup
In the first of a (hopefully) regular feature, we take a look at three high profile phones and combine our views with those of a number of high profile sites. The goal: to provide you with a common consensus as to the hottest mobile devices on the market.
This week we look at three big hitters – the Apple iPad 2, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and the HTC Incredible S. Which is most worthy of your money?
We give you a brief overview of each device and how it’s fared in reviews, as well as a collection of scores from reputable tech sites. Where the scoring method is a percentage or out-of-ten, we’ve converted it to our own out-of-five method for clarity.
Apple iPad 2
Apple must scarcely be able to believe its luck. Who could have foreseen that after a whole year of the format-defining iPad being on sale, the company would be able to launch a follow-up with barely a hint of any serious opposition? The funny thing is, the iPad 2 really didn’t need such an easy ride – it’s an excellent device in its own right, and is comfortably superior to the iPad.
Comfortably, but not overwhelmingly. As even the most glowing of reviews highlights, the iPad 2 isn’t quite the quantum leap over the original that many had hoped for. The screen is nigh-on identical, and the main additions – those two cameras – aren’t of sufficient merit to make an upgrade worthy by themselves. Still, this is a much faster, much more compact device than the original iPad, which makes it the best tablet UK money can buy.

HTC Incredible S
HTC has made a name for itself as a premium Android handset manufacturer, and it continues its stellar work here with the Incredible S. The general feeling is that HTC has made a beautifully balanced phone, with just the right mix of screen size, compactness and build quality. It also stands out for its unusual looks, with a unique sculpted back and nifty rotating menu buttons.
There are some concerns over how the device will date – it lacks the latest version of Android out of the box, and only sports a single-core processor when most of its rivals are coming out with dual-core examples. Still, right now it’s up there with the very best Android phones on the market.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
Finally, the storied ‘PlayStation Phone’ is with us. While it’s not the knock-out mixture of high-end Android smartphone and blistering handheld console we were hoping for, it’s a promising start for what we hope will be a long line of games-focused phones. The physical PlayStation controls, in particular, make this the most precise way to play games on your phone.
The main area for criticism among reviewers seems to be the curiously dim screen, as well as the handset’s somewhat chunky dimensions. In addition, some just can’t seem to get on with the admittedly rough-around-the-edges software. Still, if you’re an Android fan who’s into your games, the Xperia Play is the only device for you.
