Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc vs Samsung Galaxy S 2
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and theSamsung Galaxy S 2 are two of the most slender, stylish smartphones on the market. Neither’s found wanting for features, either – but which comes out on top in a straight face-off?
Display
Xperia Arc – 4.2-inch LCD ‘Reality’ display, 854 x 480 resolutionSamsung Galaxy S 2 – 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 800 x 480 resolution
It’s a daunting challenge for any smartphone to pitch its screen up against the Samsung Galaxy S 2. That 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus is one of the best in the business, thanks to the technology’s striking colour contrast and deep black reproduction. However, the Samsung screen down’t have it all its own way. The 4.2-inch ‘Reality display’ on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is a fine screen, and at 233ppi is actually slightly sharper than the Galaxy S 2′s 218ppi number.
Power
Xperia Arc – 1GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255 CPU, Adreno 205 GPU
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, ARM Mali-400 MP GPU
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, ARM Mali-400 MP GPU
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc’s processor is a fine 1GHz Qualcomm affair – the same as can be found throughout the recent Sony Ericsson Android range. It’s a decent performer, but the Samsung Galaxy S 2′s is on another level. It’s dual-core and clocked to 1.2GHz, while its accompanying ARM Mali-400 GPU also knocks the Xperia Arc’s Adreno 205 into the shade.

Storage
Xperia Arc – 320MB internal storage, up to 32GB microSD, 512MB RAM
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 16 or 32GB internal storage, microSD up to 32GB, 1GB RAM
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 16 or 32GB internal storage, microSD up to 32GB, 1GB RAM
Another resounding win for the Samsung Galaxy S 2. Samsung rarely shirks away from packing plenty of internal storage into its devices, unlike many of its rivals. The Galaxy S 2 comes with either 16 or 32 GB of internal storage – more than enough to keep all your apps and a good chunk of your music. The Xperia Arc, but contrast, has a rather paltry 320MB. The Galaxy S 2 also has double the RAM of the Xperia Arc, too, which reflects its considerable performance advantage.
Operating system
Xperia Arc – Android 2.3
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – Android 2.3
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – Android 2.3
All even on the software front. Both devices come with the latest version of the Android OS, 2.3, so it comes down to which custom UI you prefer. Both have their faults – we’d rather just have vanilla Android on our handsets, to be honest – but both work nicely. Most importantly of all, both devices are capable of running the Android Market’s thousands of apps with aplomb.
Camera
Xperia Arc – 8.1-megapixel, mobile Exmor R CMOS sensor, LED flash, 720p video recording
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 8-megapixel, dual LED flash, 1080p video recording
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 8-megapixel, dual LED flash, 1080p video recording
A timely counter-strike by the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. When we reviewed it, we called it “the best Android camera phone yet”, and while the Samsung Galaxy S 2 features a fine camera itself, it’s not quite as good. The key difference is low-light performance, which the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc excels at thanks to its revolutionary Exmor R image sensor technology.
Dimensions
Xperia Arc – 125.0 x 63.0 x 8.7mm, 117 grams
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.49mm, 116 grams
Samsung Galaxy S 2 – 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.49mm, 116 grams
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc pushes the Samsung Galaxy S 2 like no other handset when it comes to dimensions. Despite boasting such large screens and impressive cameras, both devices are impressively slim and light. The Xperia Arc is just 0.2 millimetres thicker than the Galaxy S 2 and just one gram heavier. Conversely, the Sony Ericsson device is ever so slightly shorter and narrower than the Samsung handset. There really is nothing in it.
