Samsung Galaxy Y vs Samsung Galaxy Fit

The Samsung Galaxy Y is the latest in a fairly long line of affordable Android phones from the manufacturer. How does it compare to one of its most recent predecessors, the Samsung Galaxy Fit?

Display

Samsung Galaxy Y – 3-inch LCD, 320 x 240 resolution
Samsung Galaxy Fit – 3.3-inch LCD, 320 x 240 resolution
The Samsung Galaxy Y has a very similar screen to the Samsung Galaxy Fit. The latter’s is bigger by 0.3 of an inch, but the newer device has a sharper display. While the two devices share the same resolution, the Galaxy Fit’s bigger size means that the pixels are that much more stretched out.

Power

Samsung Galaxy Y – 832MHz processor
Samsung Galaxy Fit – 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU, Adreno 200 GPU
Details on the Samsung Galaxy Y’s chipset are a little sketchy at present, but we do know that it’s a single-core 832MHz example. This is more than 200MHz faster than the Samsung Galaxy Fit’s, and may well be a newer chipset. We don’t know anything about the Samsung Galaxy Y’s GPU at present, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be the same Adreno 200 GPU as can be found in the Galaxy Fit.

Storage

Samsung Galaxy Y – 160MB internal storage, microSD up to 32GB
Samsung Galaxy Fit – 160MB internal storage, microSD up to 32GB
It’s all square on the memory front, with both devices coming with 160MB of internal storage on board. It’s not a lot, is it? Never fear, though – you can expand both by up to 32GB through the microSD card slot. That should be enough to fit your entire record collection on, plus a fair few apps.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy Y – 2-megapixel
Samsung Galaxy Fit – 5-megapixel
The older device could teach the Galaxy Y a thing or two about photography, it seems. For while the Galaxy Fit is in possession of a respectable 5-megapixel snapper, the Samsung Galaxy Y has to make do with a mere 2-megapixel camera unit. Neither has a flash, though, so taking pictures isn’t either phone’s strong suit.

Operating system

Samsung Galaxy Y – Android 2.3
Samsung Galaxy Fit – Android 2.2
There’s not much in it, but the Samsung Galaxy Y comes with a newer version of the Android OS. Android 2.3 isn’t dramatically better than Android 2.2, which is what runs the Samsung Galaxy Fit, but we still have to give the edge to the Galaxy Y here.

Dimensions

Samsung Galaxy Y – 104 x 58 x 11.5 mm, 97.5 grams
Samsung Galaxy Fit – 110.2 x 61.2 x 12.6 mm, 108 grams
Samsung brings its habit of refining and reducing the size of its hardware to the affordable end of the market. While the two handsets are very similar, the newer Samsung Galaxy Y is a fair bit more compact than the Samsung Galaxy Fit in every way. That includes, vitally, being more than a millimetre skinnier and 10 grams lighter.

  1. Samsung Galaxy Fit is a 3G Enabled smartphone based on Android 2.2. It has 3.31 inch display screen with 5 mega pixel camera. I think it's a nice smartphone in affordable price. You can check all features here: Samsung Price List
